Why an EV Charger Needs a Proper Install
You can technically plug an electric vehicle into a regular 10 amp powerpoint, but you'll only pull about 2 kW which translates to roughly 10 kilometres of range per hour of charging. For most drivers that's not viable. A proper 7 kW single-phase or 22 kW three-phase home charger will add 40 to 120 kilometres of range per hour and is the only realistic option for daily EV use.
An EV charger draws sustained high current for hours at a time, which is a different load profile to almost anything else in a typical home. Existing circuits aren't rated for it. You need a dedicated circuit run back to the switchboard, an appropriately sized breaker and RCD, and an assessment of whether the existing main supply can carry the additional load.
What Brands We Install
We install most major brands sold in Australia, including Autel MaxiCharger, Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Zappi v2, Schneider EVlink, and Ocular IQ. If you've already bought the unit we'll install it. If you're choosing one we can recommend a model that suits your car, your driveway layout, and whether you have solar.
Solar-Smart Charging
If you've got solar panels, some chargers (Zappi and Wallbox Pulsar Plus among them) can prioritise charging from your excess solar generation rather than pulling from the grid. We'll set this up correctly so you're banking free kilometres from your own roof during the day.
What's Involved in the Install
Most home installs take a half day. We assess your existing switchboard and main supply, run a dedicated circuit (concealed where possible), mount the charger to the wall, terminate and test, label the new circuit, and issue your Certificate of Compliance. If your switchboard isn't up to it we'll quote the upgrade as part of the same job.
Typical Cost in Newcastle
A standard single-phase home EV charger install (charger supplied by client, cable run under 10 metres, existing switchboard capable) is typically $900 to $1,500 installed. Three-phase installs, longer cable runs, or switchboard upgrades increase the cost. Free site assessment, no obligation.
